No More Shopping Mall Monopoly – Time for the Youth Oasis – Autonomy and Safety

Youth in the Open Air: No More Shopping Mall Monopoly – Time for the Youth Oasis!

Today’s youth in Poland increasingly spend their free time in shopping malls.

Cafes, shops, and movie theaters are becoming a substitute for real, inspiring spaces for growth, relaxation, and relationship-building. This situation is unacceptable!

Young people deserve something more than a closed, consumerist environment. We need places that combine recreational, relaxation, and training functions, providing real alternatives for spending time. Kids learn through play!

Youth Oasis – Creative Freedom Zone: Vision of the Future

Let’s imagine a space that responds to these needs – the “Youth Oasis – Creative Freedom Zone”. It is a multifunctional, integrated area created with the autonomy and freedom of expression of young people in mind.

Advantages of creating the “Youth Oasis”:

  1. “Youth-Only Zone” – building trust and a sense of security:
The heart of this place would be the “Youth-Only Zone” – an area dedicated exclusively to young people, where the operating rules would be partially established by a youth council. This approach, based on trust and minimal external interference (by police or municipal guards, except in crisis situations), would create a sense of security and responsibility. Young people will feel like hosts there, which encourages free socialization and self-expression.
  1. Spaces for artistic expression – “Colorful Murals”:
Young people need channels to express themselves. “Colorful Murals” – specially prepared, easy-to-clean surfaces – would become legal canvases for graffiti artists. This is not only a place to develop talents, but also a way to channel artistic energy in a constructive way, far from vandalism. Contests and workshops could additionally inspire young artists.
  2. The most interesting murals will be presented on billboards in the city. We will promote creativity and youth artwork!
  1. Adrenaline and recreation – “Zipline for a Soda”:
Who of us hasn’t dreamed of a zipline? In the “Youth Oasis”, a zipline ride from a wooded hill would end near a dining spot. The concept of “zipline for a soda, walk back on foot” perfectly captures the spirit of youthful carelessness and activity, encouraging movement and a healthy lifestyle.
  1. Sports and physical activity:
    • 3×3 Basketball: A simple yet dynamic form of basketball, perfect for integration and healthy competition.
    • Parkour and Street Workout Zone: A small but functional space with bars, rails, and low walls. This is a paradise for fans of parkour and street workout, where they can develop strength, agility, and coordination while learning safe movement techniques. You can even weave physical definitions into this, showing the principles of dynamics or gravity in practice!
  1. Relaxation and meeting zones – “Chillout Sections”:
Everyone needs a moment of peace. A space divided into smaller “sections” separated by greenery would offer various seating options – from benches and loungers to tire seats and sprawling lawns. Picnic tables, small stages for spontaneous performances, and even access to free Wi-Fi and charging stations would create ideal conditions for meetings, studying, and relaxation. Here, too, one could draw inspiration from the golden ratio, designing harmonious and aesthetic spatial layouts, and then live-demonstrate how ideal proportions affect the comfort and beauty of the surroundings.

7. Support and Personal Development Zone – “Youth Confessional”: As part of the “Youth Oasis”, we will also create a safe and discreet space dedicated to psychological support. The “Youth Confessional” is a place where young people will be able to talk about their problems, fears, or challenges in a trusted atmosphere.

Psychologist/Pedagogue On-Duty Hours: Regular, designated hours during which a qualified psychologist or pedagogue will be available. Meetings will be anonymous and voluntary, aimed at lowering the barrier to entry for young people who fear stigmatization.

Development Workshops: Short workshops and group sessions dedicated to coping with stress, building mental resilience, developing social skills, or dealing with peer pressure will also be organized in the “confessional”. This is a proactive approach to youth mental health that will allow for early intervention in problems and the promotion of wellbeing.

Additional solutions for active and peaceful lounging:

Youth community garden: Small garden beds for independent care – developing gardening skills and a sense of responsibility. This is an ideal place to learn about plant biology and ecology. And we adults will raid the garden beds and simulate cataclysms… 😀

Covered gazebos: Shelter from the sun or rain, with flexible seating.

Board and table game zones: Permanent tables for chess, checkers, or ping-pong – developing logical thinking and healthy competition.

Lighting: Aesthetic and functional lighting that will create a pleasant atmosphere in the evenings and increase safety.

Summary
The “Youth Oasis” is not just a playground; it is a comprehensive space that responds to the needs of the younger generation.
This is a place where young people can spend time actively, develop passions, learn (also through the practical application of knowledge from physics and mathematics, and even art, drawing from the golden ratio), relax, and build healthy relationships among peers, as well as receive necessary psychological support.

No more shopping mall monopoly! It’s time for spaces that truly serve the development and happiness of our youth. Additionally, the concept of the “Youth Oasis” fits into the latest research on youth wellbeing.

For example, the UNICEF report “The State of the World’s Children 2021” emphasizes that insufficient access to safe recreational and social spaces negatively impacts the mental health of young people.

Moreover, research conducted by the Polish Academy of Sciences (e.g., in the publication “Youth in the Public Space of Cities”) indicates that nearly 70% of young Poles feel a lack of attractive, accessible, and free places to spend their free time outside of home and school. Most of them (around 80%) express a desire to use spaces that offer
